It's a rare chance the sun is out in Humboldt County it has also been a long while since I've explored an unfamiliar place and what better opportunity to explore a new place than on a warm sunny Earth Day.
With a busy college student schedule it's not easy getting away for the weekend especially when you're stuck in the middle of bum fuck nowhere. But even in the middle of nowhere you can find some neat places. Today's adventure landed us in Ferndale, California a historic Victorian village 40 minutes south of Arcata. We've passed by Ferndale plenty times when coming home but never really cared much for it nor passed through it except for when we went to the fair. Ferndale is a very small town with a population under 1,500. It has a very cute downtown with most if not all Victorian buildings. Very cute to look at.
Humboldt SweetsAs you can see above the place itself looks like a house with plenty of outdoor furniture to go around. As soon as you walk inside there are baked good everywhere you look. The display of the goodies is very clean and appealing. Literally everything looks delicious it was so hard to chose. I felt like a 5 year old in a candy shop. Side note, I thought it was very neat that they had a little signature book so people could sign in and write where they came from or whatever they may please. The people working there are very friendly and answered all our questions excitedly- which is always a plus.
After our sweet treats we continued our walk up the road and found the Ferndale Art Gallery. I'm a big fan of any sort of art so that was a must stop. The gallery is filled with all sorts of pieces from ceramics to water color pieces to sown pieces, all beautiful and from local artists. Most pieces were able to be purchased, I bought a water color bookmark of a salmon with a poem on the back.
